This job was posted by : For more information, please see: Accounting Specialist Page 1 of 3 ACCOUNTING SPECIALIST/ Revised 04/04/2024 Job Title: Accounting Specialist Reports To:/ Business Services & Community Relations Manager/ Department: Administration FLSA Category: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY Performs professional accounting work which requires the regular application of well established principles, theories, concepts and practices, and oversees work order system from the accounting perspective for United Electric Co-op, Inc. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Follows and adheres to industry and United Electrics safety policies and procedures. Demonstrates and applies the core values of of the employees of United Electric. Maintains accounting records and general ledger accounts. Reconciles the general account to the general ledger. Reviews accounts for accuracy at month-end and creates journal entries for necessary adjustments. Maintains and updates property records for new equipment purchased and sold. Prepares schedules and spreadsheets for year-end audit, makes adjusting entries, performs year-end close. Prepares daily bank deposit, reconciles monthly bank deposits and electronic payments. Performs accounts payable functions. Verifies vendor statements for accuracy. Creates recurring accounts payable and posts to the general ledger. Administers bi-weekly payroll and performs a variety of payroll functions. Creates and maintains employee records and deductions. Prepares federal employment information as required. Prepares annual W-2s and 1099s. Prepares 401k information, Retirement Security Plan report, and requisite payroll information as required by NRECA. Prepares monthly state sales tax and withholding tax returns. Oversees work order system from accounting perspective; balances and closes work orders, verifys accounting accuracy, ensures labor costs align with payroll records. Prepares work orders for audit. Recommends improvements, adapations, or revisions in the accounting system and related procedures. Provides regular updates to Supervisor. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Provides support for annual membership meeting. Participates in member and public relations events as requested. Participates in educational activities, workshops, training, and other programs to improve technical skills and abilities as directed by management. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Degree in accounting or finance preferred. Background in accounting procedures required. Five years of related experience or combined education and experience required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity with FERC Uniform System of Accounts preferred. Excellent computer skills. Excellent customer service skills.
