Job Purpose National Grid is hiring Lead Engineers in pivotal roles across various departments, focusing on the planning, design, and management of electrical distribution and transmission systems. The positions encompass responsibilities ranging from asset management and system reliability to advanced engineering design and implementation of innovative technologies. Key Accountabilities Substation Standards Prepare and contribute to the development, technical content and implementation of our Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, equipment specifications and procedures; identify risks and put in place actions to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements. Provide technical support to various departments including Engineering, Design, Ops, Construction and IT. Review single lines, elementaries, physicals (plans and elevations), conduit/cable schedules, lighting, lightning, bill of materials, etc. including manufacturers' drawings. Ability to perform calculations and studies (grounding, AC & DC system sizing, lightning protection, lighting, rigid bus design, etc.) to support substation standards design basis. Transmission Line Standards Develop technical content and implementation of our Transmission Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, and procedures; identify risks and put in place actions to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements. Technical support provided to various departments including Engineering, Design, Operations, and Construction. Identifies, investigates, and qualifies approved manufacturers of equipment and monitors their performance, reliability, service, representation, and contribution to the industry. Investigate equipment problems and failures with manufacturers and vendors with recommendations based on investigative results for corrective and preventative actions and or procurement of new equipment and materials. Distribution Planning & Asset Management Assess the sub-transmission and Distribution system performance regarding capacity and reliability and develop modernization plans as needed. Conductarea studies and develop long-term integrated/area plans for infrastructure development to meet strategic objectives. Develop conceptual project plans that if implemented economically address identified T&D system needs. Provide technical support to internal and external departments for the electric transmission and distribution system's application, operation, and maintenance. Evaluate co-generation interconnection requests for impact on the distribution system and develop plans for suitable connection Resolve customer issues and operating problems, i.e.,fault duty calculations, stray voltage, power quality, motor start, etc. Substation Civil Engineering Provide project, field, and real-time engineering for all civil/structural aspects of substation design and construction. We will work on minor equipment replacements and retrofits, complicated rebuilds and new substations. Collaborate with cross-functional/multi-discipline teams: Electrical engineers and designers, as well as Construction, Environmental, Permitting, Operations, Security, Project Management, Estimating, Real Estate, and Legal departments to ensure successful project completion. Create detailed civil/structural calculations and drawings for foundations and steel and aluminum substation structures, utilizing all applicable building and industry codes and standards (ASCE 113, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, ADM, NESC, IBC, State Building Codes, etc.). Provide project oversight by directing subcontractors, interpret and review of submittals, including but not limited to calculations, drawings, material specifications, shop and construction/demolition drawings, topographical and GPR surveys, LiDAR scans, test pits and borings. Participate in or present substation projects at municipal Planning Board and Zoning Board meetings as-needed. Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited school. A Master's degree or Professional Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) or Engineering (PE) license is preferred for some roles. Minimum 6 years (10+ years preferred) of relevant engineering experience, with specific experience in transmission, distribution, or substation engineering. Strong working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Proficient Microsoft Office computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation including technical advancements Technical Skills - Electric Standards Working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes including put not limited to: substation construction and maintenance practices, electric utility practices, substation materials and equipment, grounding and lightning study analysis, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NEC, and NESC codes. Technical Skills - Substation Civil Engineering Knowledge of various structural and foundation systems required. Knowledge of various material types such as steel, aluminum, and reinforced concrete is required. Knowledge of oil containment systems, flood resilient design, civil site design, stormwater design, and Federal/State/local permitting is preferred. General knowledge of the following is desired but not required: Substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, reclosers, metal clad switchgear, control houses, etc.Substation construction and maintenance techniques, electric utility operation practices, including distribution system. Proficient with industry software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, RISA software, MathCad, L-Pile). Additional Requirements Valid driver's license with a safe driving record. Willingness to travel for meetings, training, and conferences, including potential extended hours for emergencies or system events. More Information Salary: $140,000 - $170,000 This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
