Job DescriptionSupervised by:Registered NurseSite Director of NursingQualifications:A four-year high school diploma or equivalent (GED) requiredSuccessful completion of an NYS Department of Health prescribed training Program for phlebotomyBCLS Certification and Computer Competency requiredHIV Pre and Post Test Counseling trainingcertificationCompletion of a Patient Care Associate or Nursing Attendant Training with EKG CertificationGeneral Duties:The Patient Care Associate under the direction of a licensed nurse or other medical staff in the health care setting assists the professional staff by performing, venipuncture, finger-sticks, HIV Pre and Post Test Counseling, Rapid HIV Testing, responding and assisting with emergencies, various clerical and health-related duties associated with patient care (ADLs as indicated) and contributing to the safety, care, and comfort of patients. The duties are assigned by and are performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Patient Care Associate may be required to perform the duties listed below and other duties involving the same type, area of responsibility. Patient care associates also observe their patient's mental, emotional, and physical conditions and report any changes to the nursing staff.Responsibilities:Administer total care (bed bath, partial or complete)Assist with patient's personal hygiene - including skin care, mouth care, shaving, etc.Transfers patients - in and out of bed, stretcher, and wheelchair. Including physical and mechanical liftingPositions patients and carry out a range of motion exerciseAssists with ambulating and all ADL as directedPrepares patients for meals and assists with feeding as neededAssists with unit admission and transfer of patientMakes beds and tidies patient area for bedridden patientsTakes and documents in the electronic medical record all patient's vital signs - BP, TPR, weights, intake, and outputPerforms EKGs as required and follow outlined procedures for submitting abnormal EKGsPerforms dry sterile dressing changes and assists with other patient treatmentAdministers hot and cold applications to patients, under supervisionMaintains intake and output for oral and body excretionsNotify MDNurse Staff of any changes in the patient's statusPerforms urine testing by dipstick and fractionalizationChaperon staff in all clinical areas when requestedMaintains competency in nursing skills as detailed in the clinical Performance checklist for Patient Care AssociateAssist with Nursing Follow-ups and transmits necessary information to the laboratory electronicallyAnticipates and acts to maintain a safe environmentPerforms job functions in a manner that promotes efficient use of resourcesMust wait for relief at the change of tour by staff with the same title (relieving PCA)Document all encounters in Electronic Medical RecordFlexibility to travel to Queens as neededMinimum Qualifications1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and2. Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director; and3.
