Apply today for our RN Surgery opportunity.Job Summary and Qualifications POSITION SUMMARY: The perioperative nurse is a registered nurse who, using the nursing process designs, coordinates, and delivers care to meet the identified needs of patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised because they are having operative or other invasive procedures. Perioperative nurses possess and apply knowledge of the procedure and the patient's intraoperative experience throughout the patient's care continuum. The perioperative nurse assesses, diagnoses, plans, intervenes, and evaluates the outcome of interventions based on criteria that support a standard of care targeted toward this specific population. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for surgery patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. The perioperative nurse addresses the physiological, psychological, sociolcultural, and spiritual responses of the individual that have been caused by the prospect or performance of the invasive procedure. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Supports Cache Valley Hospitals vision and mission of customer service and quality care. Utilizes knowledge of patient's age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrated positive outcomes in patient care. The registered nurse utilizes clinical expertise in performance of duties. Because dynamics of the department can change at any time, duties and schedules can change without prior notice. POSITION QUALIFICATIONSLICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Maintains a current Utah Registered Nurse (RN) license. Compact license accepted. American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification within 7 days of hireAmerican Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Life Support Course (ALS or ACLS) and Certification within 90 days of hireAmerican Red Cross or American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course and Certification within 90 days of hireEDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Proficient oral and written communication skills. EXPERIENCE/ JOB KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: One year OR experience required, two years preferredAbility to practice nursing as described by the following definition:The diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health alterations. Ability to utilize the nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but no limited to administering treatments and medication, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to patients and/or significant others. Math computational skills of dosage calculations. The successful candidate will be required to pass competencies for this position. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS (required, but not limited to):Physical Requirements: The position requires a considerable amount of physical work not to exceed 50 pounds. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds requires assistance. The individual will be required to life and move patients in the operating room, pull up or reposition patients in bed or operating room beds, lift supplies, lift and move equipment, push beds throughout the hospital, and perform external cardiac compressions. The individual must be able to bend over to perform certain duties, e.g., check chest tube drainage, check urinary output, move and position equipment, etc. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout the halls, operating rooms, patient cubicles, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety. A significant amount of writing is required. Working Conditions:The Registered Nurse works in a clean, well ventilated, and well-lighted environment. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have exposure to malodorous, infections body fluids from patients and varying exposure to noise. There is also exposure to various chemicals for sterilizing and cleaning.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):This position requires high exposure to infections wastes such as blood and body fluids that mandate the wearing of gloves, masks, gowns and goggles for every actual or potential exposure. Direct Patient Care Age Population: Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to specific issues and data reflective of the patient's status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for the primary population of patients served in the department. Demonstrates ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations. All age groups apply. Job-Specific ResponsibilitiesDelivers nursing care according to the standards of care defined within the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Clinical Practice and Standards, and Recommended Practices and Guidelines of Association of Operating Room Nurses, Inc. (AORN) including: i. Peer education and patient/family teaching, Support and reassurance, Advocacy, Control of the environment, Efficient provision of resources, Maintenance of asepsis, Monitoring physiologic and psychologic status, Management of aggregate patient needs, Supervision of ancillary personnel, Perioperative exploration and validation of current and future practices, Integration and coordination of care across settings and among disciplines, Collaboration and consultation, Ability to operate safely and trouble shot equipment, Familiar with and able to participate in operative procedures performed in this facility.Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice.Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others.Decisions and action on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner.Collaborates with the patient, significant others, and health care providers in providing patient care. Considers factor relating to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care. Demonstrates maturity and accountability for job performance. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the Department and assesses areas of personal and professional growth. Supports and promotes excellence in customer / guest relations.Supports and promotes the organizations Infection Control, Safety, and Risk Management Programs. Provides holistic nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, educational and socio-cultural needs of the patient/ family. Performs routine IV therapy. Operates and monitors specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, nasogastric suction, pulse oximeters, infusion pumps, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring equipment, video equipment, electrocautery, etc. Equipment expertise depends on area in which nurse works.Provides specialized treatments and procedures such as: IV monitoring, neuro checks, tracheostomy care, nasogastric tube insertion and suctioning, foley catheter insertion and monitoring, specimen collection, chest tube monitoring, pulmonary toilet, and monitoring. Reports and documents in the health record via hospital accepted format including; observations, facts, assessments, plan of care, care given and outcomes of the patients care; patient classification and acuity; and other data relevant to the patient care in an appropriate and timely manner. Accepts physician orders verbally or via telephone. Transcribes physician orders; prepares and administers prescribed medications and treatments according to nursing and pharmacy policy and procedure. Recognizes the need for and initiates emergency measures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Notifies the appropriate health care provider in a timely manner.Participates in nursing care conferences.Works well under stressful situations.Knowledgeable in operating room procedure. Additional ResponsibilitiesComplies with and is knowledgeable of hospital and department safety procedures and polices. Contributes to the care of the environment by maintaining work areas and assisting with light housekeeping tasks as needed.Is knowledgeable of and participates in the hospitals performance improvement program. Utilizes computer system as needed for information and to complete tasks. Maintains customers rights (confidentiality, privacy, safety, security, and decision making)Interacts with customers, who may include patients, physicians, co-workers, and visitors, in a manner that exemplifies the hospitals mission and core values. Attends scheduled in-service, department staff meetings (10 per year), skills updates, and other training sessions relative to the job. Performs basic tasks in a timely manner with minimum guidance and supervision.
