The position cultivates and maintains City plants and trees for the Parks & Natural Resources Department. This position is also responsible for administrative functions as it relates to forestry operations. This is a Rochester Hills GELC position. * Plans and oversees tree maintenance and planting programs and supervises contract service providers. * Performs tree and shrub maintenance, planting, pruning, trimming, removing, and any other tree care practices in the City parks, public rights-of-way, or other City properties. * Operates equipment involved in tree care operations, including but not limited to chainsaws, pole saws, chippers, and stump grinders. * Inspects trees for maintenance needs, including hazard evaluation and pest and disease identification. Determines preservation or removal of diseased and injured trees. Reviews City projects to ensure health and survival of trees. * Establishes and maintains an electronic tree inventory data base. Maintains all records and reports required for the tree maintenance program. * Applies pesticides and assists in the planning and implementation of City pest control programs. * Develops and writes plans and procedures including long and short-term maintenance schedules as deemed necessary to improve effectiveness. * Conducts tree surveys of City parks and public rights-of-way to collect tree inventory data. * Works with leaders to strategize the implementation of beautification projects, discuss maintenance issues, and consider design aspects for applicable areas. * Performs specialized work as needed. * Assists the Natural Resources Manager with the preparation of reports, grant applications, plan reviews, etc. Provides information required to maintain current grants and programs. * Provides service to the public by answering questions and providing information. * Operates in a consistent, safety conscious manner both in regard to personal and community safety. * Responds to tree-related storm damage emergencies. * Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * Bachelor's Degree in Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, Forest Management, Horticulture, Agriculture or a related field. * Three (3) years' experience in forestry, tree care, and the maintenance of trees. * ISA Certified Arborist or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire date. * Pesticide Applicator License or the ability to obtain licensure within six (6) months of hire date. * State of Michigan Driver's License with no more than four (4) points currently on record. * DOT medical card or the ability to obtain at time of hire. * Intermediate proficiency with office computers and related applications.
