Reporting to the Physical Education Director the Deck Supervisor is responsible for management of BCNY's Learn to Swim Program as well as other aquatic activities for members ages 7-21. Activities should focus on the physical, social, and educational development of BCNY members. He/she will collect and data to assist in identifying needs prior to planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs designed to encourage safe swimming and healthy lifestyles. Responsibilities * Administer, and supervise an age-appropriate aquatics program for members including all elements of instructional swim, specialized swim activities as necessary and swim team preparation, training, and competition to ensure they meet stated objectives and member needs and interests * Facilitate, and teach rostered aquatics programs (Learn-To-Swim, Lifeguard Training, Swim Team Practice, etc.) and monitor attendance in adherence to Clubhouse policies and other scheduled programs * Establish and maintain standards of behavior to create safe, orderly, and effective environments for learning * Evaluate members' skills and review performance records to determine their fitness and potential in a particular area of aquatics; adjust coaching techniques, based on the strengths and weaknesses of swimmers * Ensure the required safety and sanitary conditions of the swimming pool are met during program hours and record and maintain information as required by the City of New York's Department of Health relative to the operation of swimming pools * Select, train, and manage all part-time staff and volunteers working with boys, including evaluating and assessing their needs for ongoing professional development; managing staff schedules and ensuring adequate coverage of the swimming pool and locker room areas * Ensure staff members and department operations remain in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as BCNY policies and procedures * Recommend, order, authorize, and assume the purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment designed to meet member needs * Compile regular reports reflecting all activities, attendance and participation * Maintain all necessary certifications on an on-going basis prior to expiration (CPR, AED, Lifeguard, WSI, Pool Operator, etc.) * Lead professional development, staff meetings, and trainings for part-time staff as needed * Create a positive work atmosphere that fosters teamwork and a constructive exchange of ideas * Ensure that all staff members adhere to behavior, discipline, and safety policies Qualifications * Have a minimum of: − one season of previous experience as an aquatics director/deck supervisor at a New York State children's camp or program − two seasons of previous experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children's camp lifeguard which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; or − 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach, which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time * Hold an accepted and current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification * Current certification in a training course for lifeguard supervision and management as described below: * Bachelor's degree in Recreation/Physical Education or related field desirable * Minimum 3 years related work experience, preferably working with youth * Previous experience supervising staff * Excellent communication, critical thinking, and decision-making skills * Commitment to a collaborative team-oriented management approach * Demonstrated experience with activity planning, facilitation, and working with a like population * Understanding of strengths-based approaches to youth development * Demonstrated leadership skills What We Offer * PTO: Sick time only Resume and cover letter required.
