Job Title: Controller Department: Business Office Reports to: Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Job Summary: The Controller is a key leader in the Business Office, responsible for overseeing and managing all accounting functions and leading the annual audit. The Controller will maintain accurate financial records, support strategic decision-making, and advance La Salle's mission. The Controller will serve as a strategic partner for the CFO in all aspects of financial management of the institution, collaborating closely with the Director of Accounting & Financial Services and Director of Human Resources & Payroll. Supervisory Responsibilities: The Controller collaborates with the CFO in overseeing the Business Office, including the areas of student accounts, accounts payable, accounting, financial services, human resources, and payroll. The Controller will directly supervise the Student Accounts Manager and Accounts Payable Manager. Duties/Responsibilities: General Accounting & Audit • Oversees daily accounting operations and monthly closing procedures to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of financial statements and information, enabling effective decision-making by School leadership. • Leads the annual audit process, preparing and coordinating schedules, supporting the audit team, and ensuring an efficient and effective audit process with a constant goal of a clean audit opinion. • Maintains current knowledge of GAAP, non-profit accounting standards, and regulatory changes ensuring compliance while implementing best practices in School financial management. • Monitors Business Office activities to ensure adherence to audit requirements, best practices, and internal control procedures, minimizing risk and promoting operational efficiency. • Provides comprehensive support to the CFO for Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and Board meetings, preparing clear and concise reports that facilitate informed decision-making. Attends Committee meetings as requested by the CFO. • Prepare, post and reconcile all investment activity and related accounting entries, and prepare all associated spreadsheets and analyses. • Collaborates with the CFO to establish and maintain strong internal controls across the school to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. • Ensures alignment on policies, controls, and timelines with the Development Office as it relates to managing donations, pledges, and restricted funds. • Record general ledger entries in areas of responsibility • Other duties as assigned in support of the Business Office. Payroll & Human Resources • Partner with the Director of HR to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll and related journal, benefit, and account entries. • Reviews, approves, and reconciles all monthly benefit invoices, partnering with the Director of HR to understand plan changes and enrollments. • Verified and remits funding for all retirement related contributions, including bi-weekly deferrals and employer match as well as non-elective amounts Cash and Cash Receipts • Maintain bank balances in accordance with established cash management policy, providing weekly cash flow reports to the CFO. • Monitor daily cash outflows, including issued check payments, ensuring day to day cash needs are met • Reviews and signs off on all monthly bank reconciliations prepared by the Director of Accounting. Accounts Receivable / Accounts Payable • Leverage the Ramp purchasing card system to streamline payments and ensure adequate controls are in place to improve efficiency and mitigate risk. • Approves all invoices for payment, including review for proper coding and manager approvals to maintain accurate financial records and prevent unauthorized expenditures. Flags questionable items for review with the CFO. • Broad oversight of the tuition receivable efforts, ensuring timely collection of revenue and as necessary serving as an escalation point of contact on collection issues. Qualifications: • Education: Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master's Degree and/or CPA preferred. • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit or educational setting. • Skills: Strong knowledge of GAAP, non-profit accounting standards, and internal controls. Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Excel skills. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and written/oral communication skills.
