Contract DevOps Engineer Linux Upgrade Project (Public Sector Impact, Fast-Paced Delivery) An award-winning public sector organisation is looking for a contract DevOps Engineer (612 months) to join a critical, high-impact infrastructure project that directly supports public services used by thousands of people every day. A large estate of Linux servers has reached end-of-support status and now requires urgent upgrading. One engineer is already in place; this contractor will be the second hire, brought in to accelerate delivery and ensure the entire estate is upgraded by the end of 2025. This is a focused, delivery-led engagement. The team is seeking a hired gun someone whos been here before, knows how to handle legacy Linux estates, and can execute clean, well-documented upgrades with minimal hand-holding. Its a true get-in-and-deliver role, where the outcomes are tangible and critical. Responsibilities Audit and upgrade unsupported Linux servers to newer, secure versions Script and automate recurring tasks to reduce manual effort Work alongside an existing engineer to split workloads and drive faster outcomes Identify blockers, resolve dependency issues, and document changes Contribute to improving the organisations cybersecurity posture Requirements Deep Linux systems administration experience, especially in OS upgrades Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python, etc.) Confidence working across complex, legacy estates Independent mindset can work with speed and minimal supervision Experience in public sector environments is a bonus, but not essential Why This Role Matters This isn''t a corporate cost-cutting initiative it''s about securing infrastructure that underpins frontline services.
