Contract DevOps Engineer Linux Upgrade Project (Public Sector Impact, Fast-Paced Delivery)An award-winning public sector organisation is looking for a contract DevOps Engineer (612 months) to join a critical, high-impact infrastructure project that directly supports public services used by thousands of people every day.A large estate of Linux servers has reached end-of-support status and now requires urgent upgrading. One engineer is already in place; this contractor will be the second hire, brought in to accelerate delivery and ensure the entire estate is upgraded by the end of 2025.This is a focused, delivery-led engagement. The team is seeking a hired gun someone whos been here before, knows how to handle legacy Linux estates, and can execute clean, well-documented upgrades with minimal hand-holding. Its a true get-in-and-deliver role, where the outcomes are tangible and critical.ResponsibilitiesAudit and upgrade unsupported Linux servers to newer, secure versionsScript and automate recurring tasks to reduce manual effortWork alongside an existing engineer to split workloads and drive faster outcomesIdentify blockers, resolve dependency issues, and document changesContribute to improving the organisations cybersecurity postureRequirementsDeep Linux systems administration experience, especially in OS upgradesStrong scripting skills (Bash, Python, etc.)Confidence working across complex, legacy estatesIndependent mindset can work with speed and minimal supervisionExperience in public sector environments is a bonus, but not essentialWhy This Role MattersThis isn't a corporate cost-cutting initiative it's about securing infrastructure that underpins frontline services.
