Our technology provides threat detection and screening solutions for customers in our key markets: aviation, ports and borders, defence, and urban security.Our expertise spans 21 global offices, seven manufacturing sites, and five R&D centres, with a global network of 3,000 dedicated colleagues contributing towards over 40 years at the frontline of advances in safety and security.This results in careers built on variety and the opportunity to work on a range of state-of-the-art solutions, where you can develop your knowledge and experience every day.Be a member of the Technology team, providing scientific expertise and support covering items such as:Product development and support for current and future chemical, explosives, and narcotics detection productsInstrument and experimental designPlanning and execution of experimentsAnalysis of dataModelling of dataFormulation and presentation of conclusionsLiaison with both internal and external stakeholders, including customers and end usersDuties:Provide scientific support to Product Managers, potential and existing customers, and end usersProvide scientific input to the design, build, and testing of experimental equipmentSupport scientific aspects of products and their consumables throughout their lifecyclePlan and conduct experimental investigations for the purposes of supporting existing products and enhancing their performanceCritically appraise experimental data and theory and provide guidance based on interpretation of dataIdentify gaps and propose additional workContribute to project planning and review activitiesManage own time and work with a high degree of autonomy, potentially leading the work of a technicianProvide support to off-site trials and testsWork in accordance with local company policies and proceduresProvide hands-on support and up-to-date technical advice to Technical Authorities, Programme and Project Managers at testing, production, and post-production stagesDevelop an expert knowledge of Smiths Detections products and technologiesQualifications:Due to the nature of the work you'll be doing, you'll need to be eligible for UK SC Clearance (Born in the UK, or British Citizen who has lived here longer than 10 years)A PhD in chemistry or physics is highly desirableAnalytical instrument design knowledge, particularly ion mobility spectrometry, is highly desirableA well-documented demonstration of experimental and data analysis skillsProposes innovative ideas for original researchExcellent communication skills; ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levelsMust be a motivated and self-starting individual capable of driving themselves to succeed in project goals as part of a multi-disciplinary project teamAble to successfully carry out projects/assignments of reasonable scopeSuggests and contributes to determining general approach and specific solutions to technical problemsBasic knowledge of other related disciplinesFrequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniquesProvides solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexityJoin us and well help build your career, with excellent training and opportunities for career growth across the business, both locally and globally.
