There will be a local weekly education programme with further options to engage in concurrent research and audit projects. Some spaces will be available to attend the regular pan Thames training days and courses at the Royal College of Surgeons.Main duties of the jobThe cardiac surgery unit runs with 25 registrars who will be part of 3 cardiac surgical firms consisting of 3/4 consultants. There will be 17 junior and 8 senior registrars, shared between the firms. The allocation to junior or senior tiers will be decided by the educational supervisors and based on the level of experience, motivation, and communication skills. They will have 1-2 operating theatre days per week and regular outpatient clinic sessions. National Trainees (NTNs) will be given some preference for theatre time as agreed with the London Deanery and be guaranteed 2 days operating per week.Senior registrars (ST6-8)There will be two senior registrars on call at night who will be non-resident, and on a 1:5 rota with internal cover. This will allow up to 3-4 operating theatre days per week as well as outpatient clinic sessions and coordinator duties.Regular weekly education meetings will be organised and all available trainees are expected to attend.
