Senior Catastrophe and Climate ResearcherGravitas, in partnership with a leading specialist insurer, is on the hunt for a Senior Catastrophe and Climate Researcher to drive innovative research and shape the future of risk management.This position plays a dual role within the catastrophe and climate analytics team. You will manage day-to-day team operations, ensuring quality control of the quarterly catastrophe risk modelling process, and interpreting data for various stakeholders, including board members.The main responsibility is to develop a research project that estimates how many UK homes may struggle to secure insurance in the future.The role combines concepts from both academia and the insurance industry, with a focus on hydraulic modelling to examine uncertainties in hazard modelling and loss prediction across the UK.Principal ResponsibilitiesLead innovative research on UK flood risk, particularly focusing on properties that may become uninsurable.Present research findings to internal stakeholders and the board.Represent the organization and share research at external conferences and events.Build relationships within the organization and with external stakeholders, including the insurance industry, academia, and government agencies.Support the creation of Solvency II documentation for regulatory submissions.Challenge the outputs of catastrophe risk models to safeguard the business against potential model-related risks.Ensure that all outputs from the catastrophe and climate department follow established quality control procedures.Experience required:Proven experience in leading research projects from inception to completion.Undergraduate degree in Hydrology, Meteorology, Geophysics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.PhD in Climate Science, Natural Hazards, Applied Statistics, or a related subject.Postdoctoral experience in an academic setting is advantageous.Knowledge of uncertainties in complex datasets and the ability to communicate these uncertainties effectively to stakeholders.A strong record of publishing in academic journals.Proficiency in Python or R programming languages.Experience working with large datasets and performing data manipulation.High attention to detail with strong data management and precision standards.Familiarity with catastrophe risk modelling and its applications in the insurance industry is beneficial.This is a full-time role, with flexibility in working arrangements available upon discussion.
