This is an exciting opportunity to lead transformative exhibition design at one of Canadas most visited museuman institution committed to excellence, creativity, and impact As AVP of Exhibition Design, youll spearhead the vision, direction, and execution of an ambitious annual program featuring 8 exhibitions, a vibrant traveling exhibition portfolio, and ongoing gallery installations. You will guide and mentor a talented team of creative professionals, ensuring that every exhibition delivers a compelling, inclusive, and engaging experience for diverse audiences. In alignment with the museums strategic direction, this role champions visitor-centered design approaches, integrating innovation, storytelling, accessibility, and sustainability to create exhibitions with broad social relevance and resonance. Key Responsibilities Lead a multidisciplinary design teamincluding 3D and 2D designers, design technologists, and production staffin creating immersive, interactive, and mission-driven exhibitions. Manage day-to-day operations of the Exhibition Design Department, ensuring strong team engagement, resource allocation, and effective scheduling in line with OPSEU guidelines. Set and communicate team goals, conduct performance check-ins, and support professional growth and mentorship. Collaborate cross-functionally with curators, interpretive planners, evaluators, and senior leaders to ensure curatorial intent and visitor engagement are fully realized. Oversee department budgeting and work closely with project managers to monitor exhibition budgets and schedules. Ensure feasibility and excellence in exhibition construction and installation through detailed scopes of work, technical drawings, and contractor coordination. Work in partnership with registrars, conservators, and preparators to ensure safe and effective installation of exhibition materials and objects. Explore innovative uses of museum spaces, considering design strategies that optimize visitor flow, sustainability, and storytelling. Partner with digital teams on AV and technology integration, signage, and wayfinding solutions. Oversee the creation of detailed visualizations, drawings, and design documentation to communicate exhibition concepts and specifications. Develop design briefs, presentation materials, and RFP documentation for internal and external stakeholders. Uphold the highest standards in museum practice, including accessibility, copyright, contract compliance, and inclusive design. Build and maintain national and international networks to stay current on best practices in exhibition design, accessibility, and traveling shows. Collaborate with Communications and Fundraising teams to maintain consistent exhibition branding and fulfill donor/sponsor recognition requirements. Promote and ensure visitor safety and accessibility, exceeding ACA standards. Support and advance the museums commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and ongoing learning. Perform other related duties in support of the museums mission and strategic goals. Qualifications Degree in a relevant field (e.g., graphic design, industrial design, architecture, environmental graphics). Equivalent experience may be considered. 57 years of senior leadership experience in a design discipline, ideally within museums or cultural institutions. Proven experience managing design teams and setting clear performance goals. Strong portfolio showcasing successful, collaborative, and impactful exhibition projects delivered on time and within budget. Expertise in exhibition design from concept to construction documentation. Familiarity with museum practices, including object handling and installation. Demonstrated success with budgeting, forecasting, and project tracking. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable working across departments and with diverse communities. Experience advancing equity, inclusion, and accessibility through design. Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments. Proficiency with exhibition construction, lighting, graphic production, digital/AV technology, and installation. Advanced skills in design and visualization software including SketchUp, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Office. Understanding of Universal Design principles, ACA standards, and relevant building codes.
