Our client, an employee-owned, multidisciplinary consulting firm, is seeking an Electrical Department Head for their Mississauga office. This is a permanent, full-time, hybrid position (two days per week in office), with a base salary between $150-180k, or more, depending on experience, a competitive benefits and vacation package, including 5% RRSP matching, and performance bonus.The Department Head will have the ability and experience to motivate and drive employees to achieve the firms business goals and objectives. Strong people management skills are essential to encourage employee development and to ensure employees are engaged and efficient. The Department Head will help drive business development, lead with integrity and demonstrate effective and efficient organizational skills.Responsibilities include:Department Management: Assign staff to projects and other activities Track staff workload and assess staffing levels Work with other department heads across the company to coordinate workflow and resolve resource conflicts Manages overall department efficiency, staffing levels and chargeability Track allocation of site resident engineer staff and coordinate with all other departments, as necessary Provides direction and support to Project Managers in planning and executing projects Approves department overhead time charges weekly Approves vacation requests and optimizes department vacation schedules Attend and contribute to regular weekly and monthly management meetings with other senior staff Prepare monthly project and proposal forecasts and reports Be a champion to build interdepartmental relationships and collaboration opportunities Identify and implement improvement opportunities to quality, cost and on time deliveryBusiness Development and Planning: Explore and support business development opportunities independently and in collaboration with other senior staff in the company Manage proposal preparation and development of winning strategies as per established procedures and policies Assigns Project Manager and allocates resources to proposals and projects Assists with reconciling billing rates, effort and schedule during proposal preparation Have and maintain good contacts throughout the industry for experts, clients and other consulting firms Maintains existing client base and/or develop new clients through personal relationshipsand participation in industry conferences Look for opportunities to engage in speaking engagements and conference presentations Monitors Project Manager to Client relationshipsHuman Resources: Manage employee recruitment, promotion, retention, termination activities and succession planning as per established procedures and policies Ensures employees get the tools, coaching, and development they need to do their jobs Observes and evaluates employees performance Coordinates professional development to improve employees skills Builds positive working environment for employees and addresses any concerns / grievancesProject Management: Act as project manager for assigned projects On award of a project, set up the project accounts and organize the launch of the activities with the project team Organize, direct and track team progress Work with other departments to resolve resource allocations and workloads Maintain communication and relationships with clients, attend tracking meetings as required and issue regular reporting Control change management and secure changes as required Complete internal reporting and attend internal tracking meetings as required Perform technical work and work products assigned to yourself Travel to sites for meetings, inspections and other reasons as needed Assign and support site resident engineers when necessary Monitor technical leadership of the project and seek support from subject matter experts as neededQuality Management: Ensure department works in compliance with established quality system procedures and guidelines Maintain awareness of implemented changes Support the implementation of changes and continuing compliance of the department Pursue and contribute to continuous improvement Health and Safety Provide leadership in safe behaviours and certifications of department staffCore Technical Skills: Electrical System Design: Proficiency in designing electrical systems for hydropower plants, including generators, transformers, and switchgear Power Generation and Distribution: Understanding the principles of power generation, transmission, and distribution specific to hydropower Control Systems: Knowledge of control systems used in hydropower plants to regulate the operation of turbines and generators, knowledge of control systems used in substations and power plants, including SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems Power System Protection: Deep understanding of protection schemes such as overcurrent, differential, distance and busbar protection Relay Coordination: Expertise in setting and coordinating protective relays to ensure proper operation during faultsIndustry Knowledge Standards and Codes: Familiarity with industry standards and electrical codes to ensure compliance and safetySoftware Proficiency: CAD and electrical design software tools: Proficiency in CAD software, such as AutoCAD, and other electrical design software tools, an understanding of how to implement and maintain these tools for quality control and reducing effort Simulation Tools: Proficiency using simulation software such as ETAP and PSCAD for modeling and analyzing power systemsAbout You:To fill the role, were looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experience.
