We are currently scaling up our housing operations to offer affordable, supportive housing options for individuals and families across the country.We are focused on developing and managing affordable housing, advocating for impactful policy changes, and supporting individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Our mission is to ensure that everyone has access to stable, affordable housing and the necessary support to thrive.Position OverviewAs a Volunteer Board Member, you will play an integral role in shaping the organizations strategy, governance, and advocacy efforts. The board is seeking members with expertise in the following areas:1. Legal (General Legal & Real Estate)2. Financial (Capital Planning & Social Finance/Impact Investing)3. Housing & Homelessness Sector Knowledge4. Real Estate Portfolio Development/Management5. Government Relations & AdvocacyEach board member is expected to contribute their expertise to the development and execution of the organizations mission and to help ensure its overall governance and strategic direction.Key ResponsibilitiesBoard members will collectively ensure the organization remains on track to meet its mission while utilizing their areas of expertise to guide key initiatives. The Board of Directors meet on a quarterly basis, with occasional meetings or board involvement in organizational activities outside of quarterly board meetings.1. Legal Expertisea. Provide input and advice on matters related to nonprofit governance, real estate transactions and operation, and affordable housing development from a legal perspective.b. Advise on compliance, contract negotiations, and risk management for housing development projects, investments, human resources, organizational governance, and other Raising the Roof needs.2. Financial Expertisea. Advise on financial strategies, capital planning, and budgeting to ensure the sustainability of the organizations projects and operations.b. Support fundraising strategies, including social finance, impact investing, and opportunities for capital raising.c. Provide guidance on financial reports and the organizations long-term financial planning, ensuring alignment with mission-driven outcomes.3. Housing & Homelessness Sector Knowledgea. Leverage expertise in policy, research, and supportive housing operations to ensure the organizations programs are effective, impactful, and aligned with best practices in the sector.b. Stay informed on key trends in affordable housing and homelessness services and provide input into strategic planning and policy development.c. Support research efforts and provide insights on emerging issues related to homelessness prevention and housing stability.4. Real Estate Portfolio Development/Managementa. Advise on the acquisition, development, and management of affordable housing projects.b. Provide expertise in real estate portfolio management to ensure that the organizations housing projects are sustainable, operationally efficient, and aligned with organizational goals.c. Assist in the evaluation of potential opportunities for real estate investment and expansion in areas of need.5. Government Relations & Advocacya. Advocate for policies and legislation at municipal, PT, and national levels that promote affordable housing development, homelessness prevention, and housing equity.b. Help make connections with policymakers and government officials to advance the organizations mission and build relationships that support housing policy reform.c. Provide strategic insights on public policy advocacy.QualificationsWe are looking for individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Legal: Experience in general legal practice, real estate law, nonprofit law, or any combination of these areas. Finance: Experience in capital planning, finance for nonprofits, impact investing, or social finance. A background in financial management, budget planning, and fundraising is a plus. Housing & Homelessness Sector Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of homelessness, supportive housing, affordable housing development, and related policy. Familiarity with the needs and challenges facing vulnerable populations is essential. Real Estate Development/Management: Experience in real estate development, portfolio management, or housing operations. Knowledge of affordable housing financing and development processes is preferred. Government Relations & Advocacy: Experience working with government entities, advocacy, policy development, or public relations. Familiarity with housing policy at the federal, PT, or municipal level is an asset.Skills and Attributes Strategic Vision: Ability to think strategically and contribute to the long-term direction of the organization. Communication: Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with fellow board members, staff, and external stakeholders. Commitment to Social Impact: Passion for and commitment to the mission of affordable housing and homelessness prevention. Networking: Willing to expand the network of Raising the Roof, fundraise and make connections to advance the mission.CommitmentDirectors may contribute to ad hoc committees that are formed on an as-needed basis from time to time.
