Job Description

The Old York Tavern is seeking a passionate, reliable, and motivated Head Chef to join our team.We are a neighbourhood tavern with French and American brasserie influence.We are open 7 days a week for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch services.As a Head Chef, you will lead our kitchen operations with a focus on seasonal creativity, consistency, and efficiency, while maintaining a positive kitchen environment. This role balances hands-on cooking with team leadership, cost control, and collaboration with FOH management to deliver a unified guest experience.Key ResponsibilitiesLead and manage all kitchen operations and staffDevelop and execute seasonal menus and featuresEnsure consistency in food quality, presentation, and timingMonitor food costs, waste, and labour to hit targetsUphold cleanliness and safety standards (Health & Safety compliance)Oversee inventory, ordering, and supplier relationshipsFoster a respectful, communicative kitchen cultureCollaborate on events, specials, and service adjustments with managementTrain and mentor cooks and junior staffSkills & ExperienceMinimum 24 years experience as a Head Chef or Sous Chef in a fast-paced, quality-driven restaurantStrong knowledge of seasonal and local ingredientsProven ability to manage costs and lead a teamComfortable with scheduling, ordering systems, and prep managementClear, calm communicator and team leaderFood Handler Certification (required)BenefitsCompetitive salary based on experienceStaff meals provided on shiftPaid vacation and statutory holidaysWork-life balance encouraged (no late-night shifts)Collaborative, respectful team environmentOpportunities for menu development and creative inputAnnual performance reviews and growth opportunities
