About Niche Niche Technology develops and supports an advanced police Records Management System (RMS). Our current offering, NicheRMS, covers the full breadth of police operations as standard, out-of-the-box functionality. NicheRMS is in live production use in Canada, the US, the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia with well over 150,000 users. This is our sole focus and line of business. Niche Technology Inc. is a privately-owned Canadian corporation, established in 1992, that is owned and managed by its founders. Niche has subsidiaries in the UK and the US. Our Winnipeg headquarters is hiring a Support DBA, with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server. This position works as a member of the NicheRMS technical team, a stable, talented and highly experienced group with nearly zero staff turnover. Responsibilities The initial focus of the successful candidate will be to provide expert-level SQL Server support for NicheRMS customers and implementation partners, primarily in an advisory capacity. The candidate will: Support customer-side DBAs and their implementation partners in the use of SQL Server at all stages of their NicheRMS projects. Maintain current knowledge of contemporary SQL Server features and best practices and examine unexploited or new features that may enhance future versions of NicheRMS. Work with NicheRMS developers and customer resources to design and execute experiments relating to SQL Server performance, reliability, and other behavior, and collaborate with those resources to interpret the data and identify beneficial actions based on that analysis. With the NicheRMS development team, develop and maintain hosting blueprints, best practices, sizing recommendations, monitoring guidelines, and installation/configuration documentation. Administer on-premises and cloud dev/test infrastructure (servers, VMs, storage, etc.). Install, administer, and use in-house test NicheRMS deployments to better understand the platforms use of SQL Server. Longer term, the candidate may also: Assist in the hiring and management of additional Support DBAs. Participate in the ongoing design, implementation, and management of NicheRMS SaaS and other Niche-managed deployments of NicheRMS, including hiring additional staff for that work. Take part in a 24/7 critical support rotation. Support the Niche sales team during procurement exercises with prospective customers. Skills/Experience To be considered for this position, candidates must have a solid understanding of Microsoft SQL Server, including significant applied experience in most of the following areas: Basic SQL Server administration, including installation, patching, monitoring, index maintenance, script execution, backup, etc., in a multi-instance environment supporting multiple large databases BC/HA/DR solutions, including but not limited to AlwaysOn Availability Groups, active/passive clustering, and transaction log shipping Transactional replication Performance monitoring, analysis, and tuning Database integrity testing and repair Full-text search T-SQL scripting/programming Basic Windows administration, including Active Directory, file services/permissions, PowerShell, and basic TCP/IP networking Candidates can distinguish themselves by having applied experience in one or more of the following areas: Design, assessment, purchase, and implementation of enterprise hosting infrastructure (on-premises and cloud) Software development using C# NicheRMS system/database administration The position requires at least 5 years of applied experience. Preference will be given to candidates that have a bachelors degree in computer science or related fields and/or have significant additional applied experience working with Microsoft SQL Server in the capacity outlined above.
