As part of Ontarios network of community legal clinics, DCLC works to ensure access to justice for those who may not otherwise afford legal representation.The DCLC team offers legal advice, representation, and advocacy in areas such as landlord-tenant disputes, employment rights, social assistance, human rights, and other civil matters. Beyond individual legal support, the Clinic engages in public legal education, law reform initiatives, and community outreach to promote fairness and justice for all.Located in Oshawa, the Clinic proudly serves residents across the Durham Region, helping them navigate the legal system with dignity and confidence.ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Position: Director of Legal Services Reports to: Executive Director Employment Type: Full-time, PermanentLocation: 200 John Street West, Oshawa Ontario L1J 2B4Direct Reports: Clinic Lawyers The Durham Community Legal Clinic is seeking a full time Director of Legal Services to work collaboratively with the clinic management team and staff in supporting the strategic and operational goals of the clinic. The Director of Legal Services will oversee the clinic risk and standards, grow outreach and community partner development and lead justice reform initiatives.We aim to accommodate applicants requiring accommodations. Job Responsibilities include:Staying current on all legislated requirements, industry standards and best practices as they apply to the clinic and its operationsEnsuring DCLC continues to build effective relationships with community and partner organizations and the client communities served by the ClinicSupervising a team of lawyers while supporting all legal staff, volunteers and studentsCarrying caseloads in assigned areas of lawArranging, developing and delivering Public Legal Education within the clinic system and to the communityLeading social justice and law reform initiatives on issues of importance to the community we serveStaying abreast of the issues affecting our community and the clinics ability to serve those needsPlease Note: in addition to review of qualifications, interviews and reference checks, successful candidates may be invited to participate in a written test and other assessment tools.ABOUT YOU A minimum of 3-5 years or more of legal experience.You are an adaptable team playerYou are community-focused and service-orientedMust be in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario Have a strong knowledge base in one or more following areas of law: housing, employment, income maintenance, human rights, immigration or wills & estatesHave experience with legal litigation experience at Tribunals and Superior CourtHave demonstrated commitment to equity and social justiceHave a strong skill base in the areas of communication & mediation, organization & time management, leadership & mentoring, supervision & team building, research & report writingValid drivers licence Preferred:Have experience working in a unionized work environmentHave Knowledge of Durham Region, its communities and community partners Have experience with Clinic Information Management System (CIMS) would be an assetExperience in public legal education, policy reform and legislative advocacyKnowledge of Indigenous legal issues and/or the criminalization of poverty Fluency in a second languagePoverty Law Experience WHATS IN IT FOR YOU Salary$105,000 - $115,000Participation in group benefits planEmployee BenefitsPayment of annual LSO duesWe thank all applicants, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.DCLC is committed to equitable employment and hiring practices and is dedicated to building an organization that reflects the diversity of our clients and the communities we serve.
