The Position: Reporting to the Director, Market Conduct Policy and Regulation, the Research and Policy Specialist, Insurance Regulation advances the interests of the life and health (L&H) insurance industry by optimizing the policy, legislative and regulatory environment related to the distribution of insurance and marketplace regulation. The Research and Policy Specialist is a team player who works effectively both within and outside the Association on issues related to insurance distribution and intermediaries, the fair treatment of consumers and L&H insurance products as well as investment products, such as segregated funds. The position package includes: Prescription, dental and paramedical benefits, with employer paid premiums A defined contribution pension plan with employer matching We also offer a competitive compensation package 3 weeks paid vacation 10 sick days 2 floater days Hybrid work model based out of our Toronto office What you will be working on: Engagement with provincial insurance regulators and governments : This includes supporting efforts to build consensus on industry policy positions by working closely with CLHIA staff, member company representatives, committees, working groups and other industry stakeholders. Contributing to or preparing submissions or other briefings: These documents are critical to advancing the industry''s interests with insurance regulators, government and other stakeholders. Developing in-depth knowledge: Subject matter expertise in key areas including L&H insurance company practices, government and regulator initiatives and the regulatory frameworks affecting the distribution of the industry''s products is essential. Monitoring external developments : Stay informed of changes in government policy (both domestic and international), regulatory changes and media trends. This includes identifying key issues of interest and concern, assessing their potential impact on the industry, and contributing to the development of policy options and related documents. Contributing to and supporting industry guidelines : Help in the creation and maintenance of industry guidelines and reference documents related to distribution and market conduct. Contributing to member education : Support the planning and execution of relevant CLHIA conferences Contributing to member education by providing staff support to plan relevant conferences and other education programs. What you will bring: University degree in a related field (e.g. economics, policy, public administration, law) 2 - 4 years of experience in a compliance, policy or legal role in the financial services sector. Prior Life & Health insurance experience preferred. Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to problem-solve and quickly get up to speed on highly complex and technical issues. Strong organizational and time management skills to manage competing and changing priorities, including those with tight deadlines. Understanding of policy and legislative processes, especially those involving provincial and territorial governments. Strong communication skills (verbal, written, digital), and the ability to simplify complex information into clear and straightforward language. Proven ability to manage and build effective relationships, including with insurance company staff, government officials, industry stakeholders. Ability to develop options, and support evidence-based recommendations to CLHIA leadership for decision-making. Assets Knowledge of L&H insurance industry products and practices related to distribution through intermediaries. Knowledge of industry distribution oversight and monitoring practices. Experience with member-based organizations. Experience participating in and supporting committees/working groups. Experience with Individual Variable Insurance Contact products (e.g. Segregated Funds products) Experience planning programs for events/conferences. Bilingual (English/French) or ability to read and speak some French.
