SUMMARY: The Smart Grid Engineer is responsible for assessing, developing and enhancing new and existing technologies used to support the efficient operations of our Companys distribution grid. This includes evaluating and supporting the development of new technology, methodologies, and related business processes for the purposes of enhancing reliability, durability and flexibility of the grid in order to maximize the return on investment of distribution assets. This role will need to leverage key relationships within the Chief Information Technology and the Chief Electricity Distribution divisions to successfully execute a variety of projects. This role will support grid technology section functions including project management, planning, and budgeting inputs. This role assists in the development of advanced utility applications and supporting infrastructure used to control, monitor and analyze the distribution grid. There is significant emphasis on understanding the day-to-day operation of distribution grids and the role new technology plays. There is significant input into the strategic direction of smart grid technology deployment and the future needs of our Companys customers. This role provides support and assistance for developing and updating standards and processes for materials, equipment, and design of supporting technology for the electric distribution system. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential responsibilities of the job include: Identify and develop solutions that enhance the use of Grid Technology systems and applications Provide technical support to the Grid Technology Support, stations, and distribution field staff Evaluate and manage new Grid Technology projects Create analysis workflows and associated business processes for the benefit of customer departments Assist in setting strategic direction for Grid Technology systems and applications Participate in the development of our Companys smart grid roadmap Support the development and use of data analytics to improve grid efficiency and maximize distribution asset life Work co-operatively with other technology teams to enhance system and application functionality, availability, and security Prepare budget briefs for projects and participate in overall budget and business planning processes Provide input into system planning and distribution system standards and technology standards Evaluate new technology, software, and equipment Assist with managing and coordinating the successful completion of special projects as required Special projects as required Perform other duties as required EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Required: Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university (Electrical Engineering is preferred) Professional Engineer, licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario Minimum 4-8+ years of relevant work experience Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably G Suite. Strong English skills are essential, both oral and written. Considered Assets: Project Management and/or PMP Certification considered an asset Experience in an electric utility engineering environment considered an asset Experience with advanced grid applications (SCADA, ADMS, OMS, GIS) considered an asset Knowledge of Fibre Optic communications technology (including planning and management considered an asset Knowledge of wireless communications technology (LTE, fixed point-to-point, point-to-multipoint) considered an asset Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
