Position Description A key leadership role, the Deputy Director, Individual Giving (Retention) works to strengthen UNICEF Canadas positioning as a charity of choice by designing and implementing strategies that increase donor engagement and lifetime value. The Deputy Director is responsible for maximizing donor retention and increasing the value of monthly and one-time donors through strategic upgrades, cross-sell initiatives, and engagement opportunities. This role plays a pivotal part in revenue generation, overseeing the largest source of unrestricted funding within UNICEF Canada. Reporting to the VP, Individual Giving, the Deputy Director collaborates across teams to enhance donor segmentation, test new engagement strategies, and optimize retention journeysincluding for monthly donors, one-time donors, and legacy hand-raisers. The role requires both strategic expertise and adaptability to respond to market trends, ensuring sustainable revenue growth. With a primary focus on donor retention, this position oversees initiatives driving over $25 million in annual recurring revenue. The ideal candidate will be a self-directed and self-motivated leader with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with people from all lived experiences and ages. The candidate must have proven experience increasing engagement and enhancing value across direct and digital channels and have strong creative instincts to maintain strong engagement with donors. Responsibilities Marketing & Revenue Generation (40%) Lead the strategy and execution of multi-channel direct and digital fundraising campaigns to drive donor retention and revenue growth. Provide expertise as the lead on donor retention and ensure all donor communications balance engagement with revenue generation. Align department strategies with broader organizational goals, identifying cross-functional opportunities with Operations, Corporate, Marketing & Communications, and International Programs. Develop and enhance stewardship journeys for one-time, monthly, and legacy donors to maximize long-term value. Use data-driven insightsincluding welcome surveys, research, and testing strategiesto segment and optimize donor journeys and ensure communications are regularly updated. Strengthen UNICEF Canadas positioning as a charity of choice by designing and implementing strategies that increase donor engagement and lifetime value. Monitor program performance, anticipate trends, and adjust priorities to support long-term growth. Oversee creative development and execution of direct and digital marketing materials, ensuring alignment with brand standards and a strong test-and-learn approach. Work closely with the Business Solutions Team and external partners to track and optimize the performance of online and offline fundraising channels. Data Analysis, Reporting and Expense Management (40%) Analyze monthly metrics to identify trends and adjust strategies for improved performance. Work with the Marketing & Business Solutions teams to drive donor insights to improve retention, donor satisfaction and lifetime value. Make data-driven strategic decisions informed by market trends and program analytics. Ensure strategies and approaches align with UNICEFs global objectives and protocols. Team & Operational Management (20%) Build and lead a high-performing team with clear accountabilities and a foster a collaborative, results-driven culture. Conduct goal setting, quarterly check-ins, and year-end performance reviews in line with organizational processes. Provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to support growth. Support employee engagement initiatives to strengthen team motivation and alignment. Facilitate quarterly performance reviews with external vendors and internal teams to drive accountability. Develop succession plans to ensure continuity in donor engagement and program execution. Anticipate risks, plan contingencies, and proactively address obstacles. Uphold UNICEF Canadas mission and values in all fundraising activities. Maintain accurate documentation of expenses, legal agreements, contracts, and employee records. Qualifications Bachelor''s degree, college diploma, or equivalent experience in marketing, business, or a related field. 7+ years of experience in direct marketing, fundraising, or a comparable role in the corporate sector. Proven expertise in managing and leading direct and digital response programs with a strong focus on donor or customer retention. Experience overseeing internal teams and agency partners to successfully deliver programs. Strong leadership skills, with experience managing and mentoring staff. Ability to analyze data, interpret results, and generate actionable insights. Financial acumen, including experience managing $1M+ budgets, developing strategies, and building projections. A successful track record in revenue generation and business development, collaborating with senior executives, cross-functional teams, and external partners to meet $10M+ revenue targets. Deep understanding of key metrics, analysis, and fundraising best practices. Demonstrated success in executing high-impact campaigns with measurable ROI. Results-driven, deadline-oriented, and able to follow through on complex timelines. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong project management skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask effectively. Proactive, self-motivated team player who values transparency and collaboration.
