As the Director, Legal Counsel, Employment Law you will be responsible for providing legal advice and guidance to the business, senior leadership, and the Board of Directors. The ideal candidate is energetic, collaborative, and forward-thinking. This position is based out of Ontario, Canada, and is currently remote. What youll be doing: Advise on employment issues, including hiring, performance management, disciplinary actions, terminations, restructures, and compliance with Canadian and US laws and regulations Liaise with senior management and the board of directors on matters relating to executive compensation and employment law Ability to communicate and work productively with external and opposing counsel Review and, as may be necessary from time to time, prepare investigative reports, ensuring that all allegations have been addressed, all necessary witnesses have been interviewed, and that the investigation was thoroughly conducted Review document requests and audit requests by regulatory authorities or other third parties and compile responses to the same Conduct legal investigations concerning pending employment claims and other matters Conduct research and prepare legal briefs and memoranda on employment issues Review and advise company personnel on employment and labor-related issues and disputes Monitor changes in employment laws and regulations and advise on necessary updates to company policies and practices Work with the HR Department to develop and implement policies and processes on employment matters and issues Collaborate with other members of the legal team and cross-functional departments to support the companys overall business objectives Manage the Companys Conflict of Interest policy and Code of Business Conduct and Ethics Conduct annual training on the Code for all employees Youll need to have: LLB/JD and admitted to the Bar of Ontario At least 5 years of in-house or law firm experience Subject matter expertise in Canadian and US employment and labor law Excellent interpersonal, organizational, writing and communication skills Work independently with minimal supervision and/or ongoing direction Willingness to perform moderate travel as and when required Perform multiple tasks, work on short lead times and meet tight deadlines We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment, and we welcome and encourage applications from people with disabilities and people with diverse backgrounds, identities, and cultures.
