Job Description

THE OPPORTUNITY: Mental health is the most important and pervasive health challenge of our time. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation(CAMHF) has an exceptional opportunity for a passionate, visionary leader with strong relationship, revenue generation and strategic management skills. The President & CEO of the Foundation will have the chance to not only drive significant philanthropic growth but also contribute to the global conversation about mental health, shaping the future of CAMH and its impact. Working in close collaboration with the CEO and leadership team of the Hospital as well as an influential and dedicated Board of Directors, the incumbent will build on the success of previous campaigns, and develop the strategies and tactics required to reach the philanthropic goals essential to CAMHs priorities for the future. This includes acting as the primary fundraiser and spokesperson for the Foundation as well as the management of all human and financial resources and governance structures. THE ORGANIZATION: CAMH Foundation The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation (CAMHF) was established in 1998 to inspire philanthropy that enables leading-edge care, research and education at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Canadas leading hospital for mental health. CAMHF is charged with raising and stewarding funds to help transform the way we understand and treat mental illness. Raising close to $100million annually, the CAMHF team of 78 staff works closely with donors, sponsors, partners and Hospital stakeholders to drive positive change for CAMH and the cause of mental health. Our generous and dedicated supporters help CAMH advance discovery and innovation, build spaces that promote recovery, and break down the stigma of mental illness. Together we are leading a movement that will create a society that believes Mental Health is Health. The Foundations first fundraising campaign, launched in 1998, had a goal of $10million. The campaign took place at a time when stigma remained deeply entrenched and many community leaders were reluctant to openly attach themselves to the cause of mental illness and addiction. Supported by a group of prominent leaders and dedicated volunteers, the Foundations brand campaigns tackled stigma and paved the way for success. Since that time, CAMHF has raised more than $1billion to support the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. On February 7, 2023, CAMH and CAMHF announced the worlds largest fundraising campaign to support hospital-based mental health research. The $500million No One Left Behind campaign will support three key elements: life-saving mental health research programs at CAMH and the construction of the Temerty Discovery Centre and Waverley House Secure Care and Recovery Building at CAMHs Queen Street site in Toronto. It is anticipated that this campaign will successfully close in early 2025 with every building on the Queen Street campus named for a donor. While CAMH is an established global leader in mental health care, research, education and advocacy, there is much more work to do. This is a pivotal time for CAMHF as the organization is developing its 2025-2030 strategic plan (on track to be completed in early 2025). The new strategic plan will support the goals of the Hospitals 2024-2030 Connected CAMH strategic plan. It is the Foundations goal to assist the Hospital in realizing its ambitious vision by building on past success and leveraging the opportunities ahead. Philanthropic interest in mental illness is reaching unprecedented levels, powering discovery and creating hope for significant breakthroughs into the causes and cures for mental illness. CAMH Foundation has the unique opportunity to capitalize on this moment and to provide an impactful contribution. CAMH The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canadas largest mental health teaching hospital and one of the worlds leading research centres in its field. CAMH is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and is a Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization Collaborating Centre. With a dedicated staff of more than 4,500 physicians, clinicians, researchers, educators and support staff, CAMH offers outstanding clinical care to more than 40,000 unique patients each year. The organization conducts ground-breaking research, provides expert training to health care professionals and scientists, develops innovative health promotion and prevention strategies, and advocates on public policy issues for people suffering from mental illness at all levels of government. Through its Foundation, CAMH funds new programs, research and augments services. CAMH also advocates for equitable mental health resources and supports in Canadas publicly funded healthcare system. CAMH deploys new treatments and implements new models of care and support. CAMH builds new spaces to facilitate recovery and community reintegration. As the population ages and diversifies, and new technologies revolutionize day-to-day lives, this changing landscape compels CAMH to reconsider the meaning of health. CAMHs conviction that mental health is health animates its mission: integrated care, answering the most difficult questions about mental illness and removing barriers to belonging. In 2023, CAMH turned 25 years old and, over the last two decades, the Hospital has changed mental health in profound ways. The Queen Street site in the heart of Queen West, where care is provided to tens of thousands of people every year, has been transformed. CAMH has tackled prejudice and discrimination, and influenced public policy. CAMH has trained mental health professionals and inspired hope through discovery. Progress has been rapid, but the work ahead demands much more. Vision: Health Redefined Mission: We are dedicated to patient, family, and community well-being. We improve access to integrated care, answer the most difficult questions about mental illness and remove barriers to belonging. Together, we choose hope. Values: Courage, respect and excellence. KEY QUALIFICAT IONS: The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and experiences: Passion for mental health, a deep commitment to the mission of CAMH and a strong desire to make a difference in the mental health sector. A proven track record as an inspirational and transformational leader who has delivered positive, sustained performance and growth. A credible and articulate public speaker who can think quickly on their feet, with the ability to work and communicate professionally and effectively with staff at all levels, as well as board members, donors, external stakeholders and the community at large. Proven ability to cultivate relationships and raise significant funds either as a professional fundraiser, in a volunteer capacity or through professional experience in revenue generation. An effective people leader with a reputation as a humble, accessible, inspiring coach/mentor who has enabled development, independence, creative yet thoughtful risk taking in a collaborative and respectful team environment. Demonstrated commitment to advancing health equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives in the not-for-profit sector. Experience working effectively with sophisticated, passionate, prestigious and diverse boards of directors and volunteer committees. Financial acumen and strong understanding of budgeting, resource management, and financial oversight. Undergraduate degree is required; an advanced or specialized relevant degree is an asset.
