Job Description

Office of The Supervising Scientist (OSS) ensures the protection of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, and the local communities from the effects of uranium mining by undertaking environmental research and monitoring, participating in and overseeing the regulatory process and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.The Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) undertakes research and monitoring that focuses on the protection of the environment and people of the Alligator Rivers region, from the potential effects of uranium mining. It uses new technologies to collect and analyse environmental data to be used in developing environmental standards.The drone operations and technology solutions (DOTS) team leads the development of innovative remote sensing solutions employing state-of-the-art drone and sensor-based technologies in tandem with artificial intelligence/machine learning for environmental monitoring of Kakadu National Park and northern Australia regions. The DOTS team delivers enabling technologies in geospatial intelligence, geomorphological and hydrological modelling, and biodiversity assessment to facilitate a holistic evaluation of the impact of uranium mining on the environment.The jobIn this role you will be responsible for:leading and coordinating drone surveys in compliance with the departments Remotely Piloted Aircraft Operators Certificate (ReOC)proposing and facilitating innovation in the teams drone program, overseeing trials of new technology, undertaking and managing sensor integration, developing and reviewing standard operating proceduresdeveloping and validating key indicators derived from drone RGB, multispectral and LiDAR datasets for landform and vegetation mapping at the Ranger mine sitedesigning and managing research projects and preparing scientific publications and reportsother duties for the OSS and Department as required.You will be a highly motivated individual with a passion for ecological and environmental research using cutting-edge drone and remote sensing technologies. Our ideal candidate is someone who has the following skills and experience:Demonstrated experience in the use of drones to collect environmental data including the integration of sensors and maintenance of drones.Demonstrated practical experience in leading and managing field work and/or drone operations.Demonstrated experience in geospatial analysis using open-source (QGIS) or commercial (ENVI, ArcGIS, eCognition) solutions.Demonstrated experience in developing or deploying scripts using R, Python or other similar programming language.Demonstrated experience in communicating and negotiating effectively with colleagues, clients, staff, managers and other stakeholders to achieve project outcomes.We currently have one non-ongoing opportunity for 12 months available for immediate filling.
