A merit list or pool may be used for up to 18 months.This merit list or pool may be used to fill other vacancies in Canberra.Role purposeFollowing the historic investment in the National Cultural Institutions (NCIs) in the 2023-24 Federal Budget, and the development of our new 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, the Museum has a unique opportunity to deliver on an ambitious agenda, as one of the countrys foremost cultural institutions. The CFO role is critical in supporting the Museums Council, Director and Executive in realising those ambitions in a financially dynamic, accountable, and ultimately sustainable way.This is an exciting opportunity for a highly experienced finance professional, with a proven track record of delivery, to lead and manage a small multidisciplinary team with responsibility for the full range of strategic and day-to-day finance functions. The Finance business unit plays a crucial role in supporting the Museums business areas manage and deliver on their objectives, while also maintaining and strengthening the Museums financial compliance and statutory reporting functions and frameworks.The CFO will possess an excellent technical understanding of a finance function in a small agency government setting, with a dynamic and complex operating environment, that balances the competing priorities across both profit and cost centres. The role is accountable for the timely and accurate delivery of budgeting, financial management, treasury, major project financials, cost analysis, external audit and reporting functions.The key duties of the position include:Key accountabilitiesProvide strategic financial advice and support to the Museums Director and Executive, Council and Audit, Finance and Risk Committee (AFRC).Deliver key financial processes and outcomes, including annual and long-term internal budgeting and forecasting, major project financial planning and monitoring, annual financial statements and audit, and Commonwealth budgeting and financial reporting requirements.Develop strong and productive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the Museums Director and Executive, Council and AFRC, senior managers, portfolio agency and Department of Finance, external and internal audit providers, cultural and small agency sector peers, and valuers.Maintain and deepen a Museum-wide culture of sound financial management and compliance, business acumen, and integrity, transparency and accountability in decision making.Leading the Finance business unit in its successful delivery of financial operations and services across the Museum, including supporting the work and objectives of each business area.Selection criteriaEssential:Shapes strategic thinking (inspires a sense of purpose and direction, focuses strategically, shows judgement).Achieves results (builds organisational capability and responsiveness, marshals professional expertise, steers and implements change and deals with uncertainty, delivers on intended results).Cultivates productive working relationships (nurtures internal and external relationships, facilitates cooperation and partnerships, values diversity, mentors others).Communicates with influence (communicates clearly, listens, understands and adapts to audience, negotiates persuasively).Proven technical experience and knowledge relevant to the function (finance strategy, accounting standards, government accounting).Proven leadership and management experience, including the ability to drive change and business improvement.Desirable:Experience in a senior leadership role in a small agency or organisation, ideally in the cultural or not-for-profit sector and/or a Corporate Commonwealth Entity (CCE).Experience with revenue/profit generating organisations.A relevant degree in accounting or a related discipline and membership of a professional accounting body (e.g., Institution of Chartered Accountants, CPA qualifications).Eligibility RequirementsTo be eligible to apply for this vacancy, applicants must:be an Australian citizenundergo pre-employment checks, including a police record checkhold or be eligible to hold a security clearance at the level specified in the position description.NotesThe National Museum of Australia is an equal employment opportunity workplace.
