Two PhD Scholarships at the University of AdelaideStart: 11 Sep 2013End: 31 Oct 2013Location: University of AdelaideApplications invited: Two PhD scholarships in the Philosophy Discipline of the University of Adelaide.Closing date for applications: 31 October, 2013.The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Adelaide welcomes applications for higher degree (PhD) scholarships in all disciplines, including two in conjunction with the following ARC Discovery Projects in the Philosophy Discipline. The projects are funded for the period 2013-15.Available ProjectsPhilosophy of Mind: One scholarship is associated with the project The Truth about False Memory, directed by Dr Jordi Fernndez. The project is concerned with the ''false memory'' vs ''recovered memory'' debate on whether reports of long-forgotten sexual abuse in childhood should be taken at face value as expressions of genuine memories or not. Several key issues in this debate hinge on various philosophical questions regarding the metaphysics, intentionality, phenomenology, and epistemology of memory. A number of potential PhD research topics on those issues and, more broadly, the philosophy of mind are available in connection with this project, depending on the experience, skills, and interests of the best applicant. This project examines the relation between reason-involving and value-involving concepts in ethics. It asks what should be treated as basic to justification in normative ethics, how best to account for the range of ways in which different things have value, what the content of justificatory moral principles is, and how we should describe the relationship between reasons of respect and what has value. Expressions of interest are welcomed from candidates wishing to work on these and related topics at the foundations of normative ethics.
