With a primary focus on eye diseases, brain disorders, and cancer, the lab employs statistical genetics and artificial intelligence (particularly machine learning and deep learning) methodologies to advance gene discovery and improve risk prediction for these diseases. The lab also boasts exciting collaborations with industry partners in both clinical and machine learning analytical domains.Role Purpose / Responsibilities:We are seeking a highly motivated and organised postdoctoral researcher/data scientist to advance research on eye diseases, brain disorders, and cancer. Early detection and intervention play a crucial role in managing the risks for developing these conditions. We aim to enhance the prediction of risks associated with these conditions using multimodal AI approaches. Our research will utilise deep learning and statistical methods to analyse existing data such as image, genomic, and transcriptomic data. If you have a passion for research along with expertise in artificial intelligence and data analysis, we invite you to apply for this opportunity. The main responsibilities are:Develop and implement research projects in alignment with the goals of the research team.Independently analyse large-scale data, such as image, genomic, and transcriptomic data, using appropriate machine learning and statistical methods.Interpret results and draw conclusions based on the data analysis.Report to the Principal Investigator and work from the QIMR Berghofer location, although remote work may be considered.Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals.Present research findings at conferences and workshops.Work effectively as part of a research team, and collaborate with other researchers, both within and outside the organisation.Ensure that all research activities adhere to ethical standards and compliance requirements.About you:The ideal candidate would have:PhD degree (see the note below for candidates who do not have a PhD) in machine learning, computer science, physics, data science, bioinformatics, statistics, genetic epidemiology, or a closely related discipline.Proficiency in at least one of the programming languages commonly used in statistics and AI, such as Python, R, or C++.Familiarity with AI frameworks, such as TensorFlow and PyTorch.Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms and techniques, particularly deep learning and multimodal methodologies, and the ability to apply these algorithms to problems such as regression and classification.Experience in processing, cleaning, and analysis of large-scale data, such as image, genomic, and transcriptomic data.Proficiency in using high-performance computing (HPC) environments, with a specific focus on PBS (Portable Batch System) for job scheduling and bash scripting for data manipulation.Experience with distributed training on HPC systems, demonstrating the ability to handle large-scale datasets efficiently.Strong competency in version control tools, especially Git.Ability to work autonomously while also collaborating effectively on team projects.Strong record of research publications in reputable conferences and journals; publications in the field of AI is advantageous but not essential.*Our ideal candidate will hold a PhD, however we encourage applicants who may only have their Masters and who may not fully meet all of the selection criteria but are looking to further their research experience to apply.
