In College and Short on Funds? Consider On-Campus Employment

on-campus employmentOnce many young adults settle into dorm life, studying and enjoying the social aspects of being a college student, they may find themselves at a point where the realities of being an adult (and for many college students that means being an adult low on funds) begin to hit them.  Just managing being away from home and keeping their studies under control can be enough to handle for so many college students.  At first, the thought of on-campus employment may seem overwhelming.   Yet there are so many benefits to on-campus jobs for students, and most colleges make on-campus employment as convenient as possible for their students.  Here are some of the top reasons college students should seek on-campus employment:

1)  Extra cash in your pocket

Even if your tuition, books and housing are paid for, there are going to be plenty of fun things you want to do, or unexpected necessities you find that you need once you are at school.  On-campus employment can give you the security of knowing you can handle emergency expenses that come up, and enjoy college events such as sports games, comedy shows, socials and late night diner trips.

2)  Learn money management

Though on-campus employment isn’t likely to bring in enough money to cover big expenses such as housing or tuition, you can use what you make from an on-campus job to cover smaller bills, such as cell phone, gas, or recreational expenses.  If you haven’t already, start a bank account and start making small contributions with the money you make from on-campus employment.

4)  Flexibility

Since on-campus jobs are meant for busy college students, many of them allow you to work short shifts in between classes, and certain jobs such as receptionist or library attendant allow you to do homework on the job.  Jobs outside of the college campus can be a challenge for many students due to longer shifts and larger workloads that interfere with their schedule and studies.

5)  Make valuable social and educational connections

On-campus employment gives you the opportunity to expand your social circle since you will be interacting with other students on a regular basis.  You will also have the opportunity to connect with professors and other professionals that work at your school, who can offer you much needed guidance and support down the line.

6)  Decrease college loan debt

For the many students that take out loans to go to college, on-campus employment can help your debt be lower after you graduate, if you are able to use some of the money you make to pay off some of the money you borrowed.  That way, when you graduate there will be less principal money from the loan to accrue interest on.
