8 Signs You Should Quit Your Job for a Better Opportunity

signs you should quit your jobAre you spending most of your time at work completely miserable?  Does the thought of your job immediately make your stomach churn?  Or maybe you don’t hate your job, but have become complacent about your career and often wonder what other opportunities are out there that would be more rewarding and a better match for your skillset.  Most people spend at least 40 hours a week on the job, and that is too much of your life so spend in a situation that isn’t good for you.  Here are eight common signs that you should quit your job for a better opportunity:

1)  You aren’t learning anything new

If your skills aren’t being continually developed, and you haven’t learned any new skills over the past year, it may be time to look for a new job.  Even if you have been performing the same duties for a while, you should find you are getting better at them and see a positive progression in the results of your work.  If the company you work for isn’t presenting you with opportunities for you to develop your skills, such as free courses, workshops or new projects, this is one of the signs that you should quit your job.

2)  Your workplace bleeds negativity

It’s very difficult to be happy at a job where no one around you is happy.  If your boss is always in a bad mood, your co-workers are always complaining and no one smiles at you, it’s time to update your resume and start applying elsewhere.

3)  You don’t feel productive

One of the common signs you should quit your job is inability to focus and lack of interest in anything you do at work.  If you find it is a constant struggle to motivate yourself to get anything done at your current job, you may want to start looking elsewhere.

4)  Headhunters are hitting you up left and right

If you are being contacted frequently by recruiters, it probably means your skills are in high demand and the job openings in your industry are plentiful. Pay attention to what these jobs are offering (both in what you will be doing on the job and the pay and benefits), to see if you are being shortchanged by your current position.

5)  No one you work with lasts very long

Among the possible signs you should quit your job is a revolving door of employees at the current company you work for.  If there are better things out there for all of them, this may also be the case for you.

6)  You are in perpetual financial dire straits

If you struggle every month to pay your bills and never have the funds to buy yourself anything nice or do anything enjoyable, it might be time to change your employment situation.  If you work hard, you deserve to reward yourself.  Find out what other companies out there think you are worth.

7)  The schedule and culture doesn’t work for you

If you don’t have the flexibility you need to enjoy your life and take care of other responsibilities, start looking elsewhere.  If your employer values you, they should care about other aspects of your life as well and promote happiness and work-life balance.

8)  You dread going to work every day

If you have a feeling of gloom and doom on the way to work every morning, and find yourself telling everyone that will listen how miserable you are at work, this is one of the easiest-to-spot signs you should quit your job.  Life it too short to feel this way.
